Nobody Cares. Get Back to Work. A Gen X Perspective

Lately, I find myself in the same conversation everywhere…
with colleagues, fellow parents, even strangers in line at the supermarket.
“What’s happened to work ethic?”
It got me thinking about my own.
Where it came from.
Why it stuck.
As a proud GenXer, I can say this with love and a little edge… we’ve been working and caregiving circles around everyone for decades.
Call it grit.
Call it neglect.
Call it survival.
Somewhere along the way, it shaped us into hyper-independent, figure-it-out humans.
These days, I’m anti-hustle, pro-boundaries, and deeply committed to common sense… but I still believe this:
Hard work, applied wisely, is still the pathway to success.
As a 70s baby, I had the gr8 pleasure of working from the young age of 5 at my parents’ fish market.
At Harrington Seafood, it was simple:
It’s never not your job.
Didn’t matter if you were a kid.
Didn’t matter if you didn’t know how.
If it needed to be cut open, hosed down, cleaned, shucked, cooked, iced, weighed, wrapped, or cashed out… guess what? It was your job.
Sink or swim. And we learned FAST.
It’s honestly unreal to think about now... live lobsters in HUGE tanks, BIG sharp knives, cooking with FIRE, taking cash from complete strangers, and using an old crank register that required me to make the correct change… all before the age of 8.

My brother and I definitely didn’t appreci8te it at the time, but the work ethic and life skills we learned at Harrington Seafood became our survival toolkit… and later, our entrepreneurial edge.
*Knowing how to prep and prepare a vast variety of Atlantic seafood like a restaurant chef is a nice bonus too.
What “it’s never not your job” really taught was agency.
Pay attention.
Take initiative.
Do it without being asked.
Be the team player.
Solve the problem.
Fast forward to my Cre8tive career…
Design → Print→ Mail→ Web→ Email→ Social Media→ SMS→ Ai
My job has changed almost daily for the last 20 years. Because as a business owner, it’s still never not my job to learn, evolve, keep up... and now be PROMPT cre8tively in all new ways.
Turns out, “it’s never not your job” isn't just about work… it was about how you live. And it shaped how I show up as a parent too.
Because parenting, just like business, is never not your job. It’s presence. It’s responsibility. It’s figuring it out in real time.
The most frequently asked question at Harrington Seafood was:
“Why doesn’t it smell like fish in here?”
And the on-brand answer was always:
“Because fresh fish doesn’t smell fishy.”
Which is the truth, but that wasn't the only reason.

Whatah ya doin?
Holding up the towah of Piza?
If you got time to lean,
you got time to clean.
Back then, we weren’t leaning to scroll our phones. We just wanted to sit down because our feet really hurt.
But at Harrington Seafood, there was no leaning. Ever. Because there was always something that needed to be cleaned.
And… it was never not your job. 😜
This wasn’t just about staying busy.
It was about standards.
It taught me time management.
Attention to detail.
And how much presentation and perception matter.
All of that followed me into every role I’ve had since.
Reality Check These days I’ve evolved that wisdom.
Off the clock, if I have time to lean…
I also have time to rest.
Because sustainability is something GenX had to learn the hard way
The Shift
We can all agree there were things about our GenX experience that needed to change.
And they did.
But has it swung too far?
Too soft?
Are we skipping over the very things
that teach work ethic in the first place? The lived experience, the responsibility, the figure-it-out moments?
And now I’m raising an Autistic GenAlpha.

Teen8do's not a typical Alpha but in his own way, he’s eager and willing to help, learn, pitch-in, and he wants to be purposeful.
My husband and I lead by example and we run a pretty tight ship here at home, but the credit for Jake's work ethic just might need to go to Thomas the Train.
Sir Topham Hat might be the world’s worst boss, but the lessons of the Fat Controller hold up:
Be on time.
Be very useful.
Work Together
Never, never, never give up.
Honestly? Not a bad foundation for the modern workplace.
In Conclusion... Nobody Cares. Get back to work.
Only GenX can hear that and laugh…
because we’ve lived enough life to understand what it really means.
It doesn’t mean you don’t matter.
It doesn’t mean your work isn’t important.
It means:
The world keeps moving.
Life is unpredictable.
And no one is coming to do it for you.
But here’s the part I’ve learned along the way...
When you’re working with the right people, they care. And so do you.
A little cre8tivity that sticks! Love these designs?

These are my Cre8tive Notes. A place to share honest perspectives, hard-earned wisdom, and the occasional uncomfortable truth. No agenda. No performance. Just life, as I know it.
